The Robert McKnight diaries document his personal and professional life in Pittsburgh while studying law and during the early years of his legal practice, from October 28, 1839, to May 29, 1847. Major subjects included are the daily and social life and personalities of Pittsburgh, including births, deaths, engagements and marriages, particularly of members of the McKnight family ; local and national politics and elections ; the formation of chapters of the Henry Clay Club ; public lectures and preaching ; the study of law with accounts of individual trials and cases ; buildings and sights of the city ; weather, temperature, and climate ; and local fires and floods. The diaries include information on William Henry Harrison, Henry Clay, the elopement of Mary Croghan Schenley and the 1845 fire in Pittsburgh. Threre are also many passages concerning Robert McKnight's courtship of Elizabeth O'Hara Denny and friendship with lawyer Charles Bonaventure Scully.
